Players played in four 25 minute games throughout the day. The first was tiered play which was based on the level of the players. The second game was composed of mixing u9 and u10 players within each club. All levels mixed together to create equal groups. The third game was composed of mixing players of all participating clubs. The final game was a "street soccer" style where teams were randomly created to play with no refs. Players had the freedom to make their own rules and enforce them.
This event was very important for the development of these players. It allowed the staff involved the freedom to create fair games and eliminate lopsided games. When games were mixed, players were able to play without the pressure of playing for a result and you could see players express themselves on the field. Players began to try things that that they may not of in a competitive game environment. This "freedom" encouraged players to be creative and take risks, which many coaches discourage in order to get results. The atmosphere was very positive throughout the day. The parents on the sidelines were very supportive and were very calm knowing that their kids were not trying to win something. Parents were able to focus on their child’s individuality verses trying to win a trophy. Overall, a great experience for players, coaches, and parents. Next year, FYSA is looking host this event again in the north and south part of the state and implement this type of structure in leagues throughout the state.
